Blackburn has no homes in the South Bay. We run men’s sober living homes in Venice, Mar Vista, Cheviot Hills and Mid City, plus sober apartments in West Los Angeles. This page is for men from Inglewood, Hawthorne, El Segundo, the beach cities, Torrance and the rest of the South Bay who want sober housing a short trip up the coast, roughly 8 to 24 miles away by road (approximate figures).
For the apartments, schedule an apartment tour.
South Bay cities and how close they are
The South Bay is a string of separate cities between LAX and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Several of them are closer to our homes than parts of the City of Los Angeles are. Approximate road miles from Mar Vista:
- Inglewood: about 102,900 residents (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2023 estimate), roughly 8 miles
- Hawthorne: about 87,000 residents (Census Bureau 2022 estimate via LA Almanac), roughly 10 miles
- El Segundo and Manhattan Beach: about 17,100 and 35,100 residents (same source), both roughly 9 miles
- Hermosa Beach: about 19,600, roughly 12 miles; Redondo Beach: about 70,600, roughly 14 miles (same source)
- Torrance: about 139,200 residents (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2023 estimate), roughly 17 miles
- Carson about 94,500 and Gardena about 60,400 (Census Bureau 2022 estimate via LA Almanac), roughly 20 and 14 miles
The Palos Verdes cities sit at the far end, roughly 21 to 24 miles away. All of these are estimates, so check a map for your own route.
The K Line and the coast buses
Since the Metro K Line opened, the South Bay has a rail link to the Westside.
- Metro K Line. Runs from Redondo Beach through El Segundo, LAX, Westchester, Inglewood, Leimert Park and Crenshaw to Expo/Crenshaw, where you change to the E Line for Culver City, Palms and Santa Monica (Los Angeles Metro).
- Metro C Line. Runs from Norwalk to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, which opened June 6, 2025, connecting to the K Line there.
- Metro 210. Runs from the Redondo Beach Transit Center up Crenshaw Boulevard to Hollywood/Vine, crossing the E Line on the way. It is a common link for Torrance.
- Metro 212. Runs from Hawthorne/Lennox Station north along La Brea Avenue to Hollywood/Highland.
- Metro J Line. Runs through the Harbor Gateway corridor that serves Gardena and Carson, north to Downtown, where the E Line heads west.
Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and the Palos Verdes cities have no cited direct line in our data, so check metro.net or your city’s transit for the nearest connection. Many stops for Torrance, Carson and Gardena should be confirmed the same way.
Why South Bay men look a few miles north
For a lot of South Bay men, the move is small on a map and big in daily life. In close-knit beach towns it can be hard to go anywhere without seeing someone from the old days. Moving 10 or 15 miles up the coast is enough to step out of that circle without leaving the ocean, the weather or the lifestyle behind.
Work matters too. The airport, aerospace and the offices around El Segundo are major sources of work for South Bay men, and our Westside homes are a few miles north of those jobs, not across the county. Keeping a job while changing where you live is often realistic from here.
And because the distance is short, family stays close. A Sunday dinner in Redondo Beach is a K Line ride away.
Which fits you?
Most men coming from treatment start in sober living, with drug tests 3 times a week, alcohol tests every day, medication management systems and weekly updates to family and providers. Full time work and local college classes fit around it. Sober living tours are available in person or virtually.
Men who already have stability often prefer the sober apartments: furnished, month to month, utilities and WiFi included, with weekly random drug and alcohol testing and none of the curfews. They are open to anyone who qualifies, not just our alumni. Schedule an apartment tour, or call or text (888) 305-5422.
For South Bay families and treatment teams
From the South Bay, a visit is easy, and sober living tours can also be done virtually. Providers who want to keep seeing a client can do so without asking him to cross the county. Our sober living homes send weekly updates to families, providers and treatment teams, and our free virtual family support group meets every other Tuesday, 6 to 7 PM Pacific, led by a licensed therapist from Blackburn Clinical Services. See our families page or the treatment professionals page.
For county-funded treatment, call 1-800-854-7771, option 2, the Substance Abuse Service Helpline (LA County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control).
Questions from the South Bay
Can I take the train from Redondo Beach to the Westside?
Yes. The Metro K Line runs from Redondo Beach to Expo/Crenshaw, where you switch to the E Line west toward Culver City and Santa Monica.
I work near LAX. Can I live in a Blackburn home and keep my job?
Very likely. Residents can work full time, and our homes in Venice and Mar Vista are a short trip north of the airport. We will check your schedule against the bus and train options on the first call.
Is Inglewood close enough for family to visit often?
Yes. Inglewood is roughly 8 miles from Mar Vista by road, and the K Line connects it to the E Line at Expo/Crenshaw.
Can I come from a South Bay sober living into your apartments?
Yes. The apartments are open to anyone who qualifies, including men leaving other sober living homes.
