Which West Los Angeles?

The name means different things to different people. Many Angelenos use “West LA” loosely for the whole Westside. The City of Los Angeles uses it for a specific community plan area, roughly bounded by Centinela Avenue, Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards, and Pico and Exposition Boulevards (West Los Angeles, Wikipedia). The 405 splits it down the middle, and the blocks west of the freeway are often called Sawtelle. The neighborhood counts about 37,691 residents (Los Angeles County redistricting data, 2020).

When we say our apartments are in West Los Angeles, we mean it in that plain sense, and we do not go further on a public page. When we say our sober living homes are on the Westside, we mean the four neighborhoods named above. None of those homes are inside the West LA neighborhood itself.

Why men from West LA and Sawtelle look for sober housing close to home

West Los Angeles is a working neighborhood: apartment blocks, office buildings along Olympic and Wilshire, auto shops, small manufacturing, and one of the city’s best known food streets on Sawtelle Boulevard (West Los Angeles, Wikipedia). It is also a place where many people live alone in small apartments, close to a lot of restaurants and bars, with the 405 and the 10 ready to take them anywhere.

For a man from here, staying local usually makes sense. His job may be a short bike ride away. He may have family a few blocks off, a doctor he trusts, or an outpatient program he does not want to leave. A sober apartment in West Los Angeles lets him keep all of that while changing the one thing that needs to change: who he lives around. If he needs more structure first, Mar Vista and Cheviot Hills are just south and east.

Getting around from West LA

  • Metro E Line. Two stations serve the neighborhood, Expo/Bundy and Expo/Sepulveda, with Santa Monica to the west and Palms and Culver City to the east (Metro E Line, via Wikipedia).
  • Metro 761. Runs north on Sepulveda Boulevard over the Sepulveda Pass to the San Fernando Valley, every 15 minutes at weekday peak (transit.wiki).
  • Big Blue Bus. Santa Monica’s system reaches West LA and connects it to Westwood, Culver City and the beach (Big Blue Bus, via Wikipedia).

For families and referring professionals

If your son or brother lives alone in a Sawtelle studio and you have stopped hearing from him, you are not overreacting. A sober apartment puts him among men who are also staying sober, with testing that happens whether or not he answers your texts. If he moves into one of our homes first, you will receive a weekly update. Every other Tuesday from 6 to 7 PM Pacific, our free virtual family support group meets online. It is led by a licensed therapist from Blackburn Clinical Services. See the families page.

Providers referring from West LA can call us to discuss which level fits. Provider updates belong to sober living. Visit our page for treatment professionals.
