Sober Living and Sober Apartments for Men from Westchester

Blackburn’s sober living homes are in Venice, Mar Vista, Cheviot Hills and Mid City, and Blackburn Sober Apartments are in West Los Angeles. None of them are in Westchester. Mar Vista is roughly 5 miles north by road, an approximate figure, which puts our homes a short trip from the neighborhood and from the airport. This page is for men from Westchester, and for the many men who work at or around LAX, who want sober housing close by.

For the apartments, schedule an apartment tour.

The airport’s neighborhood

Westchester is a neighborhood of about 50,905 people (Los Angeles County redistricting data, 2020) on the bluffs just north of LAX. It has quiet single-family streets, a private university, a busy stretch of shops and restaurants, and the airport on its southern edge. LAX and the hotels, cargo businesses and rental car lots around it are some of the biggest sources of work for people who live nearby.

Why Westchester and airport workers call us

Airport work runs on shifts. Ramp, cargo, security, hotel and airline jobs often start before dawn or end after midnight, rotate on short notice, and leave people sleeping when everyone else is awake. That schedule can make recovery lonely. It also makes it hard to fit into a program built around a nine to five day.

Living close to work helps. From Mar Vista or Venice, the trip to the airport area is short, so a man can keep a hard-won job with seniority and benefits instead of starting over. In sober living, residents can work full time, and we will talk honestly on the first call about how your specific shifts fit. If your hours change week to week, our sober apartments may be a better fit later, because they have no curfew and no overnight permission.

Westchester also produces another kind of call: a young man back home with his parents after treatment, a few blocks from where the trouble started. Moving just north gives him and his family some distance without making visits hard.

Getting between Westchester and our homes

  • Metro K Line. Westchester/Veterans station opened in October 2022, and the LAX/Metro Transit Center station opened in June 2025. The K Line runs north to Expo/Crenshaw, where it connects with the E Line (Metro K Line, via Wikipedia).
  • Big Blue Bus Route 3. Connects the LAX/Metro Transit Center with Santa Monica (Big Blue Bus route list, via Wikipedia).

Be honest with yourself about the rail route. Going north on the K Line and then west on the E Line is a big loop for a trip of a few miles. For daily commuting, the bus or a short drive is usually more direct.

For families and referring professionals

Shift work makes it hard for families to know how things are going. You may rarely be awake at the same time. In sober living, we send the family a weekly update, so you are not relying on a missed call at 4 AM. A free virtual family support group meets every other Tuesday, 6 to 7 PM Pacific, with a licensed therapist from Blackburn Clinical Services. Learn more on our families page.

Union representatives, employee assistance programs, therapists and treatment teams can call us about a Westchester or airport-area client. Provider updates are part of sober living. See our page for treatment professionals.

Public help in Los Angeles County

For public help any day, the county’s Substance Abuse Service Helpline is reachable at 1-800-854-7771, option 2 (LA County Department of Public Health, SAPC). Public Health reported that adults 26 to 64 had the highest overdose death numbers and rates in the county (LA County Department of Public Health, July 2024), which is the working-age group most airport jobs draw from. Meetings at all hours are listed in our West LA meeting guide.
